St. Cloud, Florida — Special Report
The New York solar fraud lawsuit against Radiant Solar is a serious warning for any homeowner considering going solar. At a time when thousands of families are trying to protect their homes from rising electricity rates and an increasingly fragile power grid, New York City has taken a major consumer protection step: it filed a lawsuit against Radiant Solar, one of the city’s largest home improvement contractors, seeking $20 million in restitution and civil penalties over what officials describe as a pattern of deceptive sales and predatory financing practices tied to residential solar systems.
The legal action was filed by the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) with the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings. The city alleges 3,448 violations of administrative code provisions. Even more significantly, the city states Radiant Solar is the largest home improvement contractor in New York City by volume of permits, making this case a major precedent for the residential solar industry nationwide.
This lawsuit is not being presented as a single mistake or isolated complaint. Instead, it outlines a broader pattern that authorities say impacted thousands of homeowners.
Among the most serious allegations are:
1) Deceptive marketing and manipulated reputation
According to the city, Radiant Solar promoted misleading credibility claims by advertising an A+ Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating while allegedly holding an F rating.
For any consumer, this matters. It’s about trust, public reputation, and transparency when investing in long-term home infrastructure.
2) Failed inspections and property damage
Inspectors allegedly found the company failed building inspections at least 50 times, which is alarming when dealing with structural and electrical work on residential rooftops.
Additionally, some customers reported property damage, and others stated their solar systems never produced electricity.
3) Systems that were never connected to the grid
One of the strongest accusations is that multiple homeowners reported Radiant Solar failed to submit required paperwork with Con Edison, preventing proper system interconnection to the electric grid.
In simple terms: some families may have paid for solar… but never received the promised results because the system was never fully and legally interconnected.
This is the most serious issue—and the most relevant for working families.
The city alleges Radiant Solar:
enrolled customers in loans without their consent
inflated loan totals with undisclosed fees
and misled homeowners regarding the real value of the federal solar tax credit
The lawsuit suggests some sales representatives described the tax credit as if it were a “guaranteed check,” when the reality is different: it is typically a tax credit dependent on personal tax liability and may not translate into direct cash for every homeowner.
The investigation also states the company disproportionately targeted:
low-income neighborhoods
elderly residents
vulnerable communities
The filing further describes a pattern of high-pressure tactics—including cases where residents signed agreements on tablets without being given the opportunity to review fine print properly.
New York City is seeking:
$18.3 million in consumer restitution
$1.7 million in civil penalties
immediate revocation of the company’s home improvement contractor license
If the city prevails, Radiant Solar could be banned from operating across the five boroughs of New York City.
This case should not be misunderstood as an attack on solar technology. On the contrary: it reinforces that renewable energy remains one of the smartest long-term investments for homeowners.
What is under scrutiny is the way some companies treated solar as a fast-sales “boom,” pushing contracts and financing structures that homeowners do not fully understand.
And that is the key point.
✅ Solar should be a responsible transition.
